I watched Hoggard win another conference title and if there is two better attackman than Gunner Philipp (Army) and Luke Frankeny (Mount St Mary's) I look forward to watching them play. These are two very special players that can take over a game.

Not a good week last week going 4-9 with a lot of games being decided by 1-2 goals. Here are my rankings going into the last week of the regular season.

1. Gibbons
2. Middle Creek
3. Broughton
4. Hoggard
5. Apex - Won the second meeting.
6. GH - They need to prove that they can be consistent before they go into the top 5.
7. Leesville - Beat Heritage for the second time. Second best team in Conf. 4
8. Heritage - They are on the edge of jumping up a number of spots. Need to win the close games
9. Jordan - getting hot at the right time.
10. Millbrook - With the Holly Springs loss to PC last week this opens the door for Millbrook who played Heritage tight and has a huge rivalry game vs. Wakefield on Friday.

Games to watch:
Broughton over Heritage by 4
Chapel Hill over Orange by 2
Middle Creek over GH by 7

GH over Athens by 8
Cedar Ridge over Chapel Hill by 3
Middle Creek over Apex by 10
Millbrook over Wakefield by 3

A lot of playoff implications this week. Conf.4 & 5 have a lot of big games to see who gets in and seeding.
Conf. 3 will see their top 3 teams battle as MC plays GH and Apex this week.

Lake Norman went up to Long Island for spring break. They went undefeated and showed out up North. Brugger has the Wildcats on another state championship run. I'm excited for another run by the boys on the lake. They have the hardest schedule in North Carolina and it shows in the playoffs

Great game between Heritage and Leesville last night. While Heritage lost 10-9 (OT), they are still in the hunt to be co-conference champs if they can beat Broughton next week. Here's the current Conf 4 standings, based on the actual 9-game conf games which count

Broughton 6-0
Leesville 6-1
Heritage 6-1
Wakefield 4-3
Millbrook 4-3
Garner 3-4
Enloe 3-4
Sanderson 1-6
Wake Forest 1-6
Rolesville 0-7

Regardless of who ends up conf champions, it looks like Conf 4 will get at least 5 teams in the state playoffs. Garner probably won't make it, but has really improved their program this year!

Weddington vs AK Summary

Weddington seemed ready to go this game. It was a close game till the end then weddington began to take over led by Leonard (Furman) and Shipley (U Penn). Ardrey Kell just didnt have what it took to get past weddingtons powerful offense

Under the new system, seemingly minor changes make a big difference. For example, if Butler squeaks in to the playoffs than Mt Tabor is in the Midwest, otherwise they are playing all of the Charlotte teams in the West. There is the same issue in Raleigh where the exact dividing line moves with who makes the playoffs.

In new playoff system, only the actual conference champion matters - tier 1 seed. If a conference has a tournmanent, and that champion is different than the regular season champion - then they are a tier 2 seed.

All other teams are tier 3 seeds, and only their overall winning percentage matters. Second place, third place, etc. in a conference no longer matter for playoff selection or playoff seeding.

Good recap of Apex win over GH. Apex goalie is good, but it was the GH goalie who really stood out. The kid had 6-8 big saves where Apex probably should have scored. He's the best goalie I've seen in Triangle this year.

The seeding process has changed. No more "Preliminary brackets". No more pre-determined slots for each conference. Yes, out-of-state opponent games count. All 17 games count.

Read more here: http://www.nchsaa.org/seeding-process

There's a video too!

It will be much harder to predict matchups the week prior, because the NCHSAA won't split teams by sub-region until the 20 qulifitying teams in each region (East & West) are determined.

When does NCHSAA generally release preliminary brackets (i.e., brackets showing how each conference will be slotted)? Also, some NC teams have played out-of-state opponents. Do those games get counted for seeding purposes?
NCLaxFan wrote on April 19, 2017 at 2:05 am:
Apex 11 - Green Hope 9. Great high school lacrosse game. Back and forth in 1st half, then GH opened 8-5 lead in 3Q before Apex went on 6 goal run. Apex #13 Lalicker was the player-of-game with 6 goals. GH didn't stop his left-hand alley dodge and never won a faceoff; that was the difference. The two goalies (Sasser-Apex, Ryan-GH) are the best in the area and put on a show. Apex and GH are now tied for second in SWAC.

I would not go to sleep on New Hanover. Besides two early losses at AK and a loss at Hoggard when they were missing starters they have been very good. They had a dominant performance vs CFA winning 18-6. When healthy their defense is very good and have some talent on offense as well.
TriadLaxGuy wrote on April 17, 2017 at 4:58 pm:
Regarding the 4A final four question below, I think you have the best two teams from each of the East and West regions, but unless I've missed something the preliminary brackets have not come out yet so that we can see whether it's possible to have those 4 teams in the final four.
Johnny LAX wrote on April 17, 2017 at 4:13 pm:
A little late to the party last week but went 3-3
First rankings below
1. Gibbons - Strongest team until proven otherwise.
2. Middle Creek - If they played Gibbons it would be a great battle. A lot of their success is because of their offense and their f/o guy giving them those chances.
3. Broughton - Undefeated and earned this spot. Big gap between 2 & 3.
4. Hoggard - Their consistent play puts them here. They will roll the rest of their schedule. If GH can beat Apex tomorrow they will jump Hoggard.
5. Green Hope - Been inconsistent as of late and started really slow. Only 1 conference loss puts them here. Big game tomorrow.
6. Apex - Ok showing at Northwest. If that is a sign of an improved defense they could be really tough. A win tomorrow puts them back in the mix for the top 2 spots in Conf. 3
7. Heritage - These guys are for real. Nothing against Leesville or Jordan but Heritage can/will prove a lot this week.
8. Leesville - Will jump Heritage if they win this week.
9. Jordan - Really improved from last year. I don't think anyone wants to see them in the playoffs.
10. Holly Springs - A couple of silly losses but they are 4th best team in conf. 3 which puts them ahead of the rest.

Predictions this week:

Carrboro over Orange by 4
Millbrook over Enloe by 8

GOW - Green Hope over Apex by 1

Heritage over Millbrook by 3

Cedar Ridge over East CH by 2
Chapel Hill over Carrboro by 3
Holly Springs over Athens by 4
Hoggard over New Hanover by 10
Heritage over Leesville by 3

This week is huge for seeding in conf. 3 & 4. Will be interesting to see who comes off of Spring Break with the most fire.
