Myers Park Upset? wrote on May 4, 2017 at 2:55 pm:
Was Myers Park really upset by Southeast Guilford last night? The score on Max Preps is showing a 20-2 victory, which was expected but in favor of MP.

Any local players make a big impact in division 1 this year? It looks most of the local players are tearing it up in division 2 and 3, but I've yet to hear anything about a local player making a splash in division 1.

MC has nothing to loose. They are Not expected to win. Gibbons however, is. Loosing their last 3 in a row has to have them feeling the pressure. It gets harder and harder to tote that legacy year after year.

On the girls side, how did Cardinal Gibbons end up as a 3 seed? Only 2 losses were against nationally-ranked opponents. 1 and 2 seed in the East didn't play anyone outside of NC (and Broughton lost to the 5 seed from the West). Seems like playing a challenging regular season is not rewarded.

I don't think Middle Creek will pose a threat to Gibbons. The 2 teams that might put up a good fight are NWG and Lake Norman. Both are battle tested and solid teams, MC just hasn't been tested with competition yet.
Panther Creek over Millbrook wrote on May 3, 2017 at 2:09 am:
Not a very well played game, lots of unforced turnovers by both teams. PC was just a little better in the polished skill department and Millbrook was throwing the ball at the GK rather than shooting most of the time. When they shot, M'brk scored; when they threw the ball, the PC GK made easy saves.

10-9 at half in favor of PC; 5-0 PC second half and that was the story.

I think that it will likely be a running clock early in the second half at Gibbons on Friday unless Gibbons just takes the air out of the ball.

So how is it the odds on favorite to win the 4A title a 5th seed in the East?

Who will win 3A?

Gotta play the games, but if anyone but Cardinal Gibbons and Weddington take home championships, I would be shocked. Potential fly in the ointment for CG is Middle Creek. 3A will be smooth sailing for Weddington.

The playoff seeding process is much improved over previous years. In the 4A East, it sets up a potential Final Four of Broughton-Gibbons and Middle Creek-Hoggard. But, I see some potential upsets. In 2nd round, I think Wakefield can beat Apex if they can get 50-50 on faceoffs. If Apex wins, then don't be surprised if they go on to upset Broughton. I also think the winner of Leesville-Heritage has a good shot at beating Hoggard. Ultimately, I think it comes down to Gibbons-Middle Creek. MC has been so consistently explosive that I was favoring them, until I saw Gibbons play Landon close 8-5. In the playoffs, I always bet on defense. So, I think it will once again be Cardinal Gibbons representing the East in the public school championship.

Well, it doesn't look like Lake Norman got rewarded for their regular season. Potential first and second games against Myers Park and then Ardrey Kell? Come on!

We Talkin Playoffs?! wrote on May 1, 2017 at 5:05 pm:
How does home field advantage work in the new seeding processโ€”does subregion seeding or overall regional seeding determine? It looks like they did match ups based on subregion rankings, but home field is based on overall regional seeding. In most cases itโ€™s the same, but for example New Hanover is a 4 seed in East subregion/10 seed in overall East region. Green Hope is #5 seed in Mideast and #8 in overall East region. Bracket says game will be played at Green Hope even though GH is 5 seed and NH is 4 seed. Only explanation is the higher seed in the overall region gets the home game.

Late night for the Bull City All-Star Selection Committee. We had 206 players nominated by 92 coaches. It was an extremely competitive process with a lot of hard decisions to make. Invitations will go out this week. Thanks to all the coaches who nominated their most deserving seniors. Great support! We hope to get a great crowd out to Koskinen Stadium on Sat, Jun 3. Come cheer on your teammates, and help us raise money for the NCHSAA Tony Cullen Memorial Scholarship and the Duke Cancer Institute.

Exhilarating rematch at Charlotte Catholic between the Cougars and the Myers Park Mustangs. Earlier in the season, when these teams met, it was all Myers Park. The Mustangs dominated all game and gave Charlotte Catholic no breathing room. Friday night started off and looked to recapture the first matchup as the Mustangs got out to a 4-0 lead in the first couple of minutes. #23 Barnes and #2 Kelly showed their offensive firepower against Catholic and couldn't be stopped. As the game progressed, #10 Bagnato, the Catholic goalkeeper stood on his head making multiple key saves throughout the game, and kept Catholic ahead 5-4 at the break. The third quarter was neck and neck and set up for a great close to the game. The Cougars efficient offense, led by #12 Thompson (2) and #2 Byrne (2), kept pushing the Cougars ahead of Myers Park. Late in the fourth quarter, sophomore #2 Kelly spearheaded the comeback and helped draw the Mustangs level late in the fourth. A last-second chance was missed on a faulty fast break for the Cougars that would have sealed the game. Overtime followed and Myers Park, after winning the face-off, lost possession to a crease violation, and awarded possession to Charlotte Catholic. On the other end, sophomore marksman, #4 Bohmer took a step-down shot for the OT win. Great game all around showcasing the Conference 12 strength that gave the Cougars revenge against rival Myers Park.

Try Ravenscroft 21 and DA 7.

Green Hope 11 - Athens Drive 8. Good SWAC game and closer than expected; it was senior night for AD and they are fighting for playoffs while GH was playing third straight game. AD FOGO was consistent allowing them to control ball with patient 6 on 6. GH Def (Colpo, Kearns, Lux) were very physical on AD's best player, #22 Padden, who was visibly worn down by end of game. GH goalie had as good a second half as you'll see, repeatedly stuffing point-blank shots and using every part of his body to finish with 18 saves. AD should still make playoffs and won't be an easy out. GH finishes tied for second in SWAC with Apex but GH owns the head-to-head point differential; not sure if that determines seeding.

Three more local players are making an impact at IL #8 Denison (Div III).

Will Donohue (Latin, Class of 2013), is a senior attackman and captain of the Denison squad, playing this weekend for the conference championship. Will scored career goal 100 last weekend placing him top 15 of all time.

Owen Armstrong, Latin Class of 2015 (sophomore), is a first line midfielder at Denison having a strong season with 22 goals and 6 assists. Peter Pittroff, Charlotte Country Day class of 2016 (freshman) has 10 goals and 9 assists.

Denison is ranked #8th in DIII. Good luck in the NCAAs.
